Updating Task Status

Task status can be updated to communicate how the task is progressing. Updating task status informs others about where the task (and the overall project) is and how it is progressing.

Understanding Task Status

Understanding Default Statuses

On the Update Status bar of a task, the status drop down allows users to update the status of a task. The default statuses are:

  • New: No work has been done on the task yet. The percentage is set to 0 percent automatically.
  • In Progress: Work is ongoing and in progress, somewhere between 0 and 99 percent.
  • Complete: Work is complete. The percentage is set to 100 percent automatically.

Understanding Custom Statuses

Workfront administrators can create custom statuses to match their organization's workflow terminology.

Understanding Status Updates

When updating a task, you can update only the task status (New, In Progress, or Complete), or you can provide a status update for the task in addition to updating the task status.

The status update is a personalized update that you type into the 'Update Status' field.

  • Updating the task status

To provide a status update for the task:

    • In Progress: Work is ongoing and in progress, somewhere between 0 and 99 percent
If you have already committed to working on the task (by clicking 'Work on It'), the condition is automatically set to Going Smoothly when changing the task status from 'New' to 'In Progress.'
    • Complete: Work is complete. The percentage is set to 100 percent automatically.
  5. Include an update message explaining your reason for changing the status.

You can format the comment you make by selecting the desired formatting attribute on the toolbar, then entering the text. For more information, see "Making Comments."

  6. Click Update.
For information about the additional functionality that is available when updating a work item, see "Updating Work Items."
