Calculating Cost Schedule Performance Index (CSI)

The Cost Schedule Performance Index (CSI) combines the Cost Performance Index (CPI) and Schedule Performance Index (SPI) into one general metric that balances cost and schedule.  By multiplying these factors together, a single metric can account for a protracted schedule at a lower budget or vice versa.  Project managers may use this to determine general project health when cost is sacrificed to drive schedule mid project, or vice versa.

CSI is visible on both Projects and Tasks Details tabs.

Organizations not requiring time entry will not be able to use this metric. Additionally, organizations without defined roles or user-based cost rates cannot use the cost-based PIM and expect accurate results.

The formula for CSI is:

CSI = CPI x SPI

1 = Follows overall plan

>1 = Under budget schedule combination

<1 = Over budget schedule combination
